On November 7, the third annual Starfish Award Recognition Event was held to honor those who have exhibited outstanding emotional support to patients, family as well as other colleagues. The Committee Members and other hospital staff, including BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, gathered in the Bornstein Amphitheater to acknowledge the recipients of this year’s awards.
“This special award reflects what patient care is about, the intensity of care we are able to provide, our ability to understand and put one’s hand around a family member and realize the stress that is present in patient care,” said Gottlieb.
The Starfish Award program was initiated in August 1999 to better recognize those caregivers whose actions defined what emotional support is and how it can be measured.
“I am proud and grateful to have the honor of acknowledging the kindness and tenderness provided to our patients and families, “ said Sharon Perryman, BSN, RN, chair, Starfish Reward and Recognition Committee.
Among this year’s recipients were Don Covey, the Department of Patient and Family Relations and a most special recipient Bette Jo Green, RN. Green has been a staff nurse in the Center for Women and Newborn since 1973. “This is an incredible surprise and honor,” said Green. “I truly enjoy being with patients, meeting people from all different walks of life, finding out what they need and having the privilege to be invited to the birth of a baby and meeting the family.”
The lively ceremony was followed by a reception in the Pod B Cafeteria, where staff and friends met to celebrate the honored staff’s achievements.
